Mookuthi Amman Trailer Talk: The Nayanthara-RJ Balaji Comedy Pits God Herself Against Godmen

Two days after Disney Hotstar made its intention clear to enter into the Tamil digital content space in a big way with the announcement of four new series and one film, the team behind Mookuthi Amman launched its trailer a few minutes before the big Chennai SuperKings versus Royal Challengers Bangalore IPL match.

The team behind last year's political satire LKG returns but this time, the target has moved to organised religion and the people who benefit from innocent devotees.  The hilarious trailer, which begins with a Goddess saying she's more weary of believers who run down other Gods as opposed to atheists, seems like a searing take on corrupt Godmen who are in the business of spirituality.

Playing a 'Nanjil TV' reporter named 'Engels' Ramasamy, RJ Balaji's character is the older brother to three sisters, all of whom are "training" to be high profile professionals. In the two-minute trailer, everything from the NEET exams, Chennai's poor water quality, online classes, crony capitalism to blind devotion is referenced for LOL moments.

Nayanthara plays Mookuthi Amman, Ramasamy's family deity, who appears in reality to turn their fortunes around, apart form teaching  certain people a lesson or two. Going by the premise, the film reminds one of films like Aamir Khan's PK, OMG and even the recent Malayalam hit Trance, which took on  corrupt religious establishments.

With RJ Balaji's unique brand of humour, the film promises a laugh riot, which also touches upon several issues plaguing the people of Tamil Nadu. Overall, one of the best trailers of recent times.

Directed by RJ Balaji (and NJ Saravanan), whose most recent release LKG was a big success, the film is produced by Vels Film International. The film, which is said to follow the template of Hindu devotional "saami padams" of the 90's, was originally supposed to release in theatres in May 2020.

Other actors in the film include Urvashi, Ajay Ghosh and Indhuja Ravichandran.

It's Telugu version, titled Ammoru Thalli, will release simultaneously on Deepavali. The Telugu trailer of the film was launched by Mahesh Babu.

Other releases on Disney Hotstar includes Karthik Subbaraj's production Triples, Venkat Prabhu's first series Live Telecast, Tamannah's thriller November Story and Sathyaraj's family drama My Perfect Husband.
