In the age of Coronavirus quarantines, lockdowns and self-isolation, many more of us are relying on streaming platforms in search of distraction, escape and just plain entertainment. Luckily December promises to end a difficult year on a high, with a number of exciting streaming releases. From new films from the likes of David Fincher and Vikramaditya Motwane to Disney blockbusters like Mulan and Soul, here are our picks of what's releasing this month across platforms.

Netflix

AK VS AK

When: TBC

Vikramaditya Motwane's latest has a hell of a concept. After a public spat with a movie star (Anil Kapoor), a disgraced director (Anurag Kashyap) retaliates by kidnapping the actor's daughter, filming the search for her in real time. We are so there. 

Paava Kadhaigal

When: TBC

A Tamil anthology from exciting filmmakers including Gautham Menon, Vetri Maaran and Sudha Kongara, Paava Kadhaigal (Sin Stories) explores how love, pride and honour influence complex relationships through four intricate  stories. 

The Prom

When: December 11th 

Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Keegan-Michael Key in one unmissable movie event from Ryan Murphy. The Prom looks like just what the doctor ordered to end this year on the feel-good high note we desperately need.

Mank

When: December 4th

David Fincher. Enough said. His latest stars Gary Oldman as alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish "Citizen Kane." 

Bombay Rose

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

When: December 18th

Based on Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play, Chadwick Boseman's last film follows the rising tensions between Ma Rainey (Viola Davis), her ambitious horn player (Boseman), and the white management determined to control the legendary "Mother of the Blues."

Bridgerton

When: December 25th

Shonda Rhimes' first project for Netflix is all you really need to know about this one. Searching for true love on high-society London's competitive marriage market, Daphne Bridgerton meets her match in a dashing but wedlock-resistant duke.

The Midnight Sky

When: December 23rd

George Clooney directs and stars in this post-apocalyptic tale which follows a lonely scientist in the Arctic, as he races to stop Sully (Felicity Jones) and her fellow astronauts from returning home to Earth, where a mysterious global catastrophe has taken place.

Bombhaat

When: December 3rd

The latest direct-to-digital Telugu release follows a man who's been cursed with bad luck since childhood. That is until he meets a 'Humanoid Robot' being hunted by 'The Mad Scientist. Intrigued? We certainly are.

The Sound Of Metal

When: December 4th

Riz Ahmed stars as a drummer gradually losing his hearing, who must make a choice between his art and his way of life in this highly acclaimed independent film finally making its streaming debut.

Coolie No. 1

When: December 25th

The latest David Dhawan remake of a David Dhawan's classic starring Varun Dhawan is none other than Coolie No. 1, the most 'massy' movie to debut on a streaming platform yet.

I'm Your Woman

When: December 11th

Rachel Brosnahan stars in this 1970s set crime drama about a woman is forced to go on the run after her husband betrays his partners, sending her and her baby on a dangerous journey.

Yearly Departed

When: December 30th

Yearly Departed is a series of eulogies for the year 2020, where a line-up of all-women comedians will deliver everything from casual sex to beige Band-Aids and everything in between that we've "lost" in 2020. The Wilds

A group of teen girls from different backgrounds must fight for survival after a plane crash strands them on a deserted island. Think Lord Of The Flies but with a modern twist.

Mulan

Disney's much-discussed live-action adaptation of the beloved classic finally makes its way to Disney+ globally. Acclaimed filmmaker Niki Caro brings the epic tale of China's legendary warrior who risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known.

Godmothered

When: December 4th

Isla Fisher stars in a comedy about a young, inexperienced fairy godmother-in-training,  who  upon  hearing  that  her  chosen  profession  is facing extinction, decides to show the world that people still need fairy godmothers.

Euphoria: Trouble Don't Last Always

Picking up after the events of the Season One finale, the acclaimed HBO series starring Zendaya returns for a Christmas special episode.

Soul

Disney Pixar made another movie and that should be all you need to know really. Pixar's latest follows Joe Gardner – a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. The Breaking Bad star returns to TV in this adaptation of  Israeli TV series Kvodo (remade earlier this year in India starring Jimmy Shergill). When a respected New Orleans judge's teenaged son Adam (Hunter Doohan) is involved in a hit-and-run, it leads to a high-stakes game of lies, deceit and impossible choices.

The Stand

When: December 18th

Based on Stephen King's best-selling novel of the same name, The Stand stars Whoopi Goldberg, Alexander Skarsgård and James Marsden. In a post-apocalyptic world decimated by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil, the fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) and a handful of survivors.
