MUBI India everything you need to know

Arthouse cinema streaming platform MUBI has launched a new channel dedicated to Indian cinema.

For the uninitiated, besides its arthouse focus, MUBI isn’t quite like other streaming platforms for a number of reasons. While other services tend to offer indefinite access to selections of films and shows, MUBI offers a collection of hand-picked films for a period of 30 days only, introducing a new film every day. The platform’s founder Efe Cakarel has been discussing his India ambitions for some time now, which he first announced when he attended the 20th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival With Star late last year.

What Can I Watch?

MUBI India offers an impressive starting lineup including titles such as Kamal Swaroop’s Om Dar-B-Dar,  Kanu Behl’s short film Binnu Ka Sapna, Mani Kaul’s Duvidha, Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay, Guru Dutt’s Pyaasa, Satyajit Ray’s Ghare-Baire and even cult comedy Andaz Apna Apna among others.

How Much?

MUBI India subscriptions are currently available at an introductory offer of INR 199 for three months. Alternatively, a full year of the service is available for INR 4,788.

The Good

Access to specially curated films which often include titles you’d have a tough time finding anywhere else online.  The hope is that apart from giving Indian audiences access to underrepresented gems, it will also help put a spotlight on Indian cinema for global audiences who have been largely exposed to the same mainstream fare.

The Bad

The time. Any film on the platform is forever on a countdown, only available for 30 days, so you have to catch them before they leave (Andaz Apna Apna, for example, will expire by the end of the day).
