Streaming Calendar: 21 Movies And Shows To Watch Out For In January 2020

These days it feels like a real challenge to keep up with what's dropping when on which platform, with new show announcements popping up all the time. That said, January promises to be an exciting start to the year in the world of streaming with a wide range of stories. From a whole bunch of new stand-up specials to Kabir Khan's war epic to more Sex Education, here are our picks of what's releasing this month across platforms.

Netflix

Messiah

When:  January 1st

The latest Netflix original series sees the CIA  investigate a charismatic spiritual leader whose followers believe that he is the world's saviour. Is he a divine entity or a violent extremist? Sounds majorly binge-worthy to us.

Vir Das: For India

When: January 26th

India's most popular comedy export returns with his third Netflix stand up special, making him one of the few global comics to have three on the streaming platform. His new special For India promises to take you on a celebratory journey through the history of India, from its people and traditions to modern culture and famous films.

Jamtara – Sabka Number Ayega

When: January 10th

The first Indian original of the new year follows the true story of a group of young men scamming people across the country until things take a turn for the worst. The trailer certainly looks promising and we can only hope this can turn around Netflix's luck with their original content in India.

What The Love! With Karan Johar

When: TBC

The streaming giant takes a turn towards reality shows with What The Love which sees Karan Johar mentoring six singletons through their personal struggles as they look for love. Sounds like it has all the makings of the next big guilty pleasure and we're certainly intrigued.

Afsos

When: 17th January

A suicidal man and a psychopath encounter the world of immortality. If that doesn't pique your interest, nothing will. The latest Prime Video show is a black comedy which stars Gulshan Devaiah, Heeba Shah and Anjali Patil and sounds like it could be just the kind of curiously offbeat story designed for the web.

Russell Peters: Deported

When: 17th January

After being the first comic to have a Netflix special Russell Peters moves to Amazon Prime for his latest comedy special Deported. Shot in Mumbai, his new show promises to be his most personal yet, taking a step away from the racial stereotype humour he's known for.

Treadstone

When: 10th January

A spin-off of the Bourne movies focusing on the shady spy organisation and their various operatives around the world could well make for a great show. Add to that Shruti Hassan in a supporting role and this one certainly has our attention.

Wake N Bake (Stand Up Special By Rohan Joshi)

When: 10th January

AIB's Rohan Joshi becomes the latest comic to jump on the Prime Video comedy special bandwagon with his new show which covers everything from growing older, the education system, parenting, home renovation, ghosts in Mumbai and beyond.

Avenue 5

When: 20th January

Set 40 years in the future, Avenue 5 follows the captain and crew of a luxury space cruise ship as they navigate disgruntled passengers and unexpected events. The show comes from the mind of Veep creator Armando Iannucci and stars Hugh Laurie, so just get on board. Pun totally intended.

American Pie's Jason Biggs stars in a family sitcom about parents who have a set of genius kids. All the makings of a new comfort watch, wouldn't you say?

Mr. And Mrs. Season 3
