Abhishek Kapoor’s (Rock On, Kai Po Che) Kedarnath places the oldest story in the book, that of the star-crossed lovers, against the backdrop of one of the biggest natural disasters in recent memory: the cloudbursts in Uttarakhand in 2013 that resulted in flood, destruction and deaths in the valley.
Sushant Singh Rajput plays a Muslim tour guide and Sara Ali Khan, who makes her Bollywood debut, plays a pilgrim who belongs to a staunch Hindu family.
The trailer, expectedly, opens with pretty vistas of the Himalayas, the blue skies, and the flowing streams in sweeping panoramic shots. And as with most trailers nowadays, plays a mini-version of the entire movie.
We get the meet-cute scenes; the setting up of the impending disaster – we are told that the holy site of pilgrimage is getting more tourists than it can handle; the amping up of the religion-divide angle – when someone asks Rajput’s character what he, a Muslim, is doing here, he proudly says that his family has been serving there for generations. The music (composer Amit Trivedi, background score Hitesh Sonik) gains momentum and doom strikes Kedarnath (VFX-heavy visuals of swelling waters, darkened skies).
Kedarnath is produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Pragya Kapoor. It will release on 7 December.
