6 Times The Usage Of Guitars in Bollywood Songs Made Us Cringe

The rockstar archetype is a trope that's often used in cinema to depict coolness. But when shiny leather jackets are strapped on to actors and guitars handed to them, logic tends to get sidelined. These moments, sometimes fleeting, are so half-baked in their execution that they make their guitar handlers look the total opposite of macho.

Film Companion compiled a few instances of when Bollywood took it too far with guitars. We decided not to nit-pick and include minor faults like actors playing guitars that weren't plugged in. (Suspension of disbelief, anybody?) However, here are some moments that were so outlandish, they made us pull out our hair and wonder, "What just happened?"

Ain't Nobody Got Time For Strap

The song Oh Oh Jaane Jaana from Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya features one of Bollywood's most iconic guitar motifs. But the video to it is something truly special. After making a truly rockstar entry on-stage by riding in on a bike, we dolly in on a shirtless Salman Khan who plays the lick as only Bhai can. Khan walks down the stage as he fake-plays an electric guitar (that isn't even strapped) to what is clearly an acoustic guitar on record. After some swanky footwork, he tosses the guitar and it is caught by his friend off-stage.

Putting The 'Electric' In Electric Guitar

In the song Dhunki from Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Katrina Kaif organises a rock concert at Agra Fort without permissions. Just moments before, with one strum of her guitar, she sent electric currents that shatter all the glasses of buses parked behind. Take a hike, opera singers!

Come Rain Or Sunshine

Speaking of electrical currents, Fardeen Khan seems to have no fear of them. In this shot from the song Dil Kare from All The Best, we see him lofted mid-air while simultaneously being hosed with water. You don't need a genius to tell you that not only is that a safety hazard, but also a waste of a perfectly good guitar.

The Mithun 360% Strum

A repeat offender is Mithun in Disco Dancer. Sample this shot from the song Yaad Aa Raha Hai. Mithun strums his guitar with all the might he can muster. Each strum brings back memories until he is so overcome with emotion that he does a super move – somewhat the guitar equivalent of Dhoni's helicopter shot. Step aside, Pete Townshend!

While My Guitar Gently Sweeps

Satish Kaushik's Karzzzz is filed with many cringe-inducing guitar moments. In the song Hari Om Hari Om, Himesh walks to the center of the stage, his guitar dragging behind. He strikes a ridiculously uncool pose before lifting the guitar to play it. What follows is laughably bad posture that will make any musician squeal. For a movie about a rockstar, they sure chose to skip over a few important details.

Stairway To Hell

In the film Mujhse Dosti Karoge, we are introduced to Uday Chopra's character Rohan in the song Saanwali Si Ek Ladki. As the opening notes are played on the guitar, we see him dressed in all black with his back facing the camera. Then the lyrics come in and he does this awkward swaying descent down the staircase. One look at Chopra's hands and you can tell he's not even trying.
