MAMI 2016: A Simple Life, Film Companion

Born in 1987 in Basirhat, West Bengal, Manas Mukul Pal found his beginnings in theatre. After directing and acting in school plays, he joined a professional theatre group. In the past, he has assisted renowned Bengali filmmakers. Sahaj Paather Gappo (Colours Of Innocence) is Pal’s debut film.

Excerpts from a quick chat:

His cinematic journey

My dad used to take me to watch great movies like Goopy Gyne Bagha ByneJawsJurassic Park etc. The light and darkness in the theatres used to mesmerize me all the time! In my school days I started acting and directing plays. At the age of 14, I was deeply affected while performing a character in an Utpal Dutta play titled Nilkantho. After graduation, I joined a theatre group in Kolkata. In 2014, I started working on Colours of Innocence.

MAMI 2016: A Simple Life, Film Companion

The story behind Colours of Innocence

It based on Taalnabami, a short story by Bibhutibhusan Bandyopadhyay, which is a lyrical presentation of rural life in the raw. It’s the simplicity that attracted me the most in the story. It’s a tale of innocence, love, hope and struggle for existence. The world of the two little kids stirred me. It is a story from the world of innocence to the world of experience, an awakening to the reality of deception.
