Superstar Rajinikanth’s Next Titled Petta

Undeterred by the underwhelming performance of Kaala, Superstar Rajinikanth has kept himself busy, shooting for his upcoming film with young director Karthik Subbaraj. Fans had fondly titled the film 'Thalaivar 165' and are expecting Karthik, a hardcore fan of the star, to deliver the Rajini brand of heroism which was missing in Kabali and Kaala.

'Thalaivar 165' was officially christened Petta (gangster's area) today. A motion poster was also released, introducing a dashing, charismatic Rajini, akin to his iconic Baasha look. The motion poster is like the prelude to an action sequence set in a dilapidated church. The Superstar seems poised to strike in his trademark style. We also see the contents of a geometry box – a compass and divider – and a sheaf of papers flying around. Rajini is said to be playing a hostel warden, who has a larger task at hand when he isn't looking after the students.

A galaxy of actors are set to share the screen with him – Vijay Sethupathi, Trisha, Simran, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bobby Simhaa, Guru Somasundaram, Megha Akash, Sananth and Munishkanth. Here's some trivia – this is the first time any of them will star in a Rajini film. Simhaa and Sananth are said to be playing Rajini's sons, while Vijay Sethupathi is the antagonist. Simran will be paired with the Superstar.

The story of Petta is set in Ooty and Madurai. So far, it has been shot predominantly in the Himalayan regions of the Northern and Eastern parts of India.

Anirudh, who will be scoring the film's music, packs the motion poster with massy 'Hey Hey' chants and an upbeat tempo. Known to be a huge 'Thalaivar' fan, Ani had famously said once that he imagines and visualizes Rajini whenever he needs the inspiration to do the background score for a mass action scene.

Tirru is the film's DoP, while Vivek Harshan is its editor. Peter Hein is the stunt choreographer and Suresh Selvarajan is the production designer.

Petta will hit the screens in the summer of 2019. In the meantime, Rajini fans have Shankar's 2.0 to look forward to. The film will hit theatres on November 29, with its teaser set to be released on September 13.
