Chekka Chivantha Vaanam Trailer Talk: Mani Ratnam Returns To The Gangster Space

After flirting with the romance genre in Oh Kadhal Kanmani and Kaatru Veliyidai to mixed results, legendary director Mani Ratnam returns to the gritty action drama space in Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (CCV). His earlier films in this genre, Nayagan and Thalapathi, are celebrated as cult films to date.

A nearly three-minute-long trailer was launched earlier today, introducing the core of the story, all the main male leads and the women in their lives. Editor Sreekar Prasad has taken his time and delivered a trailer that leaves no room for confusion and is stylish without resorting to needless gimmicks. It appears as though CCV falls squarely in the gangster genre with Vijay Sethupathi (as Rasool) playing a policeman who is drawn to the murkier side of things.

Prakash Raj plays gang leader Senapathi, whose reputation polarizes people. Arvind Swami plays his eldest son Varada, the aggressive go-to man for hushing up the gang's dirty work. Jyotika plays his wife, Chitra, while Aditi Rao Hydari plays Parvathi, a journalist he has an affair with.

Rasool and Varada are one-time friends, now in opposite camps. Varada feels cheated and let down, while the temperamental Rasool keeps flirting with danger. The trust issues between them seem to add a lot of significance to the story.

After playing the gangster Vedha (in Vikram Vedha), it seems that Vijay Sethupathi is now a cop like Vikram (played by Madhavan) in CCV. And, Varada definitely has shades of Inba (played by Madhavan) from Aaytha Ezhuthu.

Arun Vijay plays Senapathi's second son Thyagu. He is a stylish, learned man, who is secretly eyeing his father's throne. Aishwarya Rajesh plays his wife, Renu, with a distinct Sri Lankan-Tamil accent. STR plays the youngest son, Ethi. He is a dashing young man who is keen on his father's line of work, but feels ignored by the man personally. Dayana Erappa plays his girlfriend Chaaya; their relationship blooms in Serbia. Thyagu and Ethi are compelled to travel to Tamil Nadu from abroad after a point.

The interaction between Ethi and Rasool is one of the highlights of the trailer. A.R.Rahman keeps his score for the trailer in line with the nature of the 4 main male leads.

To sum up, the trailer is action-packed and dishes out a lot of drama. The sheer multitude of talent involved makes it a fascinating, binge-worthy trailer. The film will be released on September 28.
