The teaser for the long-awaited Kalank is finally here. As expected, the 2-minute teaser offers expanse, scale and opulence. We are given a series of striking visuals of massive sets, lavish landscapes and a turbulent love story which appears to be centred on Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. Beyond this, it offers little by way of hinting at the story though it provides fairly even screentime to the entire star cast which also includes Sonakshi Sinha, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Roy Kapur. Described as ‘a tale of eternal love set in Pre-Independence India’, the film’s first look also includes a clip suggesting a communal riot.
Kalank sees the return of writer-director Abhishek Varman. The filmmaker made one of the most talked-about debuts in 2014 with his charming Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor-starrer 2 States after which he seems to have vanished. It’s now apparent as to why as Kalank is by no means a small project. Dharma Productions’ period epic is the first in a series of upcoming expansive big bets and multi-starrers, which seems to be Bollywood’s trend of the hour. A clear result of the Baahubali effect, further heightened by Sanjay Leela Bhansali recent successes. One of the final clips of the teaser even showcases what appears to be Varun Dhawan in a colosseum-style bullfight, which feels uncomfortably close to Bhallaladeva’s bullfight scene in S.S. Rajamouli’s epic.
