Through the investigation the series provides a scathing commentary of the country today, exploring all the things in our society that is designed to divide, from caste to class to gender to religion and beyond. Based on Taruj Tejpal's book The Story Of My Assassins, Paatal Lok is produced by Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Sharma's Clean Slate Films. Written by Sudip Sharma, Hardik Mehta, Sagar Haveli and Gunjit Chopra, the series is directed by Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy.
