Chaitanya Tamhane

Chaitanya Tamhane

Where: The Disciple

Why: An ‘executive produced by Alfonso Cuaron’ credit would’ve been the crowning accomplishment of any other film, but for Chaitanya Tamhane’s The Disciple — a striking portrait of an Indian classical music singer desperately in love with an art form that doesn’t love him back — it was just the beginning. It became the first Indian film since 2001’s Monsoon Wedding to compete at the Venice International Film Festival, winning the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize and the Best Screenplay award. It also won the Amplify Voices Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, after which it was picked up by streaming giant Netflix for global distribution.
