Where: Kaithi

Why: Kaithi is the film that clinches Karthi’s reputation as a disruptor. For a while now, the hero has also been playing parts that are interestingly ‘unheroic’. He was a con man in Kaashmora and Thambi. He was a toxic emotional abuser in Kaatru Veliyidai. He played a cop in Theeran Adhigaram Ondru, but with a single-mindedness that makes the heroine unnecessary after a point. In Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Tamil film Kaithi, there’s the sense of a mainstream actor coming full circle in refining what’s “acceptable” in the mainstream. A blockbuster with no songs, no heroine: the film shows what audiences will accept if given half the chance.
