A R Rahman

Where: Dil Bechara, 99 Songs

Why: The composer has disrupted the traditional shelf-life of a composer. Since his debut in 1992, with Roja, he has had his ups and downs, but he has stayed at the top like no composer before him. It says a lot that huge stars like Vijay still seek him out, because getting AR Rahman on board is still a big deal for the perceived value of a project. As he grows older, his sound gets younger, as seen in Bechara. And as seen in 99 Songs, his restlessness, his desire to disrupt what we know as “film music” is what it was all the way back in 1992.
