A taxi driver in Mumbai who couldn’t become a famous singer wants to make her daughter one, Fanney Khan, like Dangal, is about a father who wants to fulfil his dreams through his daughter. He has named her Lata; he suggests that she sings “evergreen” songs sung by her famous namesake over her preferred choice of more recent dance hits.

Lata finds her father to be too old-fashioned, and when she squanders opportunities at singing talent hunts, she dreads that she will also end up being another Fanney Khan, stuck in obscurity in the city of dreams. She also has weight issues, and the rejections seems particularly harsh: A college crowd boos her for being fat, and a judge at a reality show rejects her saying, “Because your parents named you after a famous singer, doesn’t mean you can sing”.

Things take a turn when a desperate Fanney Khan kidnaps Baby Singh (Aishwarya Rai), India’s number one pop-star, with the help of a friend (Rajkummar Rao). All wrapped in a package of feel good–Rajkummar’s character is a fan of Baby Singh, and they seem to strike a friendship.

Directed by Atul Manjrekar, with music and lyrics by Amit Trivedi and Irshad Kamil, Fanney Khan will release on 3 August. It is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Anil Kapoor, P.S. Bharathi, Rajiv Tandon.
