The well which Parshya took a plunge in to impress Archie has become a lake. Rural Maharashtra has become Rajasthan. Ajay-Atul are back with a new title track and a Hindi version of the viral hit “Zingaat”. And Madhukar (Ishaan Khatter) and Parthavi (Jahnvi Kapoor) are the new star-crossed lovers in the Hindi adaptation of Nagraj Manjule‘s Marathi blockbuster from 2016 Sairat.

Directed by Shashank Khaitan (Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Badrinath Ki Dulhania), the scenes appear familiar and new, all at once. We know the story: the role-reversal in the girl wooing the boy, the college scenes, the MLA-villain type father (Ashutosh Rana). But they play out differently; most notably in a scene in which Madhukar sings a Hindi romantic song for Parthavi in English.

We hope this emphasis on English-Vernacular divide isn’t a distraction from Sairat‘s central conflict of caste divide. Dhadak, as it is, has been made on the ironic premise of being the launchpad for two star kids — Khatter is Shahid Kapoor’s half-brother, and Janhvi Sridevi’s daughter — and produced by Karan Johar‘s Dharma Productions. The film will release on 20 July.
