From Bhavesh Joshi Superhero to Race 3 – A Weekly Roundup Of Film Music

Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (Hindi)

The soundtrack of Bhavesh Joshi Superhero — an Indian equivalent of Kick-Ass?—released last week. It has just 4 songs, though, thankfully all of them are composed by one composer – Amit Trivedi. Hum Hain Insaaf passes muster given how familiar it sounds within the composer's body of work. The male-item song, or the 'Chavanprash' song as it is called now, is cringe-inducing, 'healthy' lyrics or not. The intentionally 90s masala rhythm keeps it marginally interesting, though the lyrics extending the healthy line gets progressively bad. Papon's Qasam Kha Li too is pleasant in a middling way, evoking memories of other songs by Amit. The song that stands out and extends Amit's repertoire is Tafreeh! The gently lilting rhythm kicks in when Amit utters the first 'Tafreeh', and it builds steadily from there onwards, towards a solid anthemic ending.

Race 3 (Hindi)

Two songs from the Indian Fast and the Furious… Race 3 are out too. Heeriye, composed by Meet Bros, is predictable—and passable fun too—Punjabi dance material that revels in dropping the beat for maximum foot appeal.

Selfish is the other end of the spectrum – a serene melody that works mainly because of Vishal Mishra's melody and not necessarily due to Salman Khan's lyrics!
"Apne khayalat ko share karo na
Ek baar baby selfish hoke apne liye jiyo na" is straight out of Salman's Twitter feed!

Vanjagar Ulagam (Tamil)

From the Tamil film scene, we have composer Sam C.S. striking it rich yet again! His new single, Kannanin Leelai deftly mixes the deeply absorbing Dharmavathi raaga with some mind-bending EDM! The result is very, very interesting. Swagatha S. Krishnan's vocals are pitch-perfect!

Kannadakkagi Ondannu Otti (Kannada)

And finally, to close this week's update, we have a fantastic soundtrack from the Kannada film industry! Composer Arjun Janya is going steady with his brand of music and frequently hits stupendous highs, like last year's Raaga. His new soundtrack for the film Kannadakkagi Ondannu Otti is really well-produced! Vijay Prakash does outstanding singing in both Yella Halli Love Story and the title song. The former is an enjoyable mix of soul, searing electric guitars, a dollop of jazz and most interestingly, tabla, while the latter is rhythmic and incredibly catchy. Sanjith Hedge's two songs make for great listening too – Rasthe Pakka Boddi Haida's breezy rock and Neene Geechida Saalina's impressive chorus stand out. The soundtrack closes with Nana Mele Nanageega, that, despite having strong traces of Rahman's Rhythm number Kaatre En Vaasal, comes into its own thanks to Sonu Nigam's vocals, and Shreya Ghoshal's in the song's other version, Ommomme Nannannu.
