Trailer Talk: Beauty And The Beast

Trailer Talk: Beauty And The Beast

Did Emma Watson hedge her musical bets on Disney instead of Damien Chazelle? We'll never know the full story but according to the grapevine, the actress was attached to La La Land before Emma Stone took over and sashayed her way to awards glory.

Well, the world can now judge Watson's singing chops in this year's Disney live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. The final trailer is as grand and sweeping as it was expected to be. Watson plays the fresh-faced Belle, who is too clever for her small-minded townspeople while Dan Stevens is the tragic Beast – this latest incarnation of the character appears to have stepped right out of the Hellboy series. Not surprising considering Guillermo Del Toro was, at one point, supposed to direct the movie.

Bill Condon is the new man in charge. Condon's previous credits include The Twilight Saga movies and the 2006 musical Dreamgirls. Condon's version of the fairy-tale seems faithful to the original. Mrs. Potts (Emma Thompson) remains a kind little teapot and Lumiere, the lamp, (Ewan McGregor, clearly enjoying himself) is French as ever.

Also, even though Watson will surely belt a few tunes, Disney has called in some pop heavy-hitters to reprise the title song, so memorably performed by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson in 1991. Hopefully this duet, sung by Ariana Grande and John Legend, will be the soundtrack to many childhoods as was the case with its predecessor.
