Trailer Talk: Badrinath Ki Dulhania

Trailer Talk: Badrinath Ki Dulhania

Three years is a long time in Bollywood. In 2014, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt were impish upstarts when they teamed up for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, director Shashank Khaitan's DDLJfor millennials. In 2017, they almost feel like grizzled pros, especially Bhatt, whose slate of roles has been quite diverse.

To see the stars back with Khaitan, lighting up the screen with their effortless chemistry, is a welcome change. This one is set in Jhansi and Dhawan affects a local accent to play Badrinath Bansal, an endearing simpleton, obviously, with a heart of gold. His romantic partner is Bhatt's Vaidehi, outspoken and spunky – not unlike her character from Humpty Sharma…

There are the usual hallmarks of romcom trailers: shots of the stars in glamorous outfits, charming meet-cutes in picturesque locations, some cheeky back-and-forth between them and finally, quick cutaways to serious flashpoints. The trailer also rams home the catchy theme song and features the requisite update of a classic hit song "Tamma Tamma."

While many have assumed that the movie will be more in the vein of Humpty Sharma…, Dhawan insists that the two are set in different worlds and that, this one is a different kind of love story.

That remains to be judged but this sneak peek indicates that Khaitan and his cast have stuck to what they do best. So far, it seems to be working.
