Searching

Aneesh Chaganty’s feature film debut follows a man (John Cho) who must track down his missing daughter (Kya Dawn Lau), relying solely on her internet footprint for clues. Despite unfolding entirely on screens, the narrative device never feels like a gimmick given how immersive the central mystery is.

Talvar

This Meghna Gulzar film is based on the 2008 Noida double murder case, in which a teenage girl and her family's house help were both found dead at different places in their building. Now caught in a web of accusations about honor killings, the parents begin to protest their innocence.

Knives Out

When the wealthy patriarch of the Drysdale family (Christopher Plummer) is murdered, detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) must investigate which of his money-grubbing relatives had the means to carry out the crime. The Rian Johnson movie is a neat riff on the Agatha Christie formula.

Talaash

When an actor drives his car into the sea, an investigating officer’s (Aamir Khan) search for the mystery object that he was attempting to swerve leads him down a trail of blackmail, more murders and cover-ups. Reema Kagti’s film is best remembered for its twist, which lends the film an air of tragic finality.

The Guilty

Set entirely in one room, this remake of the 2018 Danish film follows a police dispatcher (Jake Gyllenhaal) as he races to save a kidnapped woman over the phone.

Andhadhun

A pianist pretending to be visually impaired witnesses the murder of his client. This Sriram Raghavan crime thriller is full of twists and turns, doubt and double-crossing.

The Good Nurse

When a night nurse (Jessica Chastain) discovers that her co-worker is responsible for the deaths of their patients, she must work with the police to prevent his serial-killing spree. This Tobias Lindholm film is also an indictment of the medical system that allows such crime to go unpunished.

Monica O My Darling

Director Vasan Bala brings his fondness for the movies and movie references to this crime thriller named after a song from the 1971 film Caravan. It begins with a murder at the robotics factory and goes on to include an affair, a pact to murder another character and a case of mistaken identity.

The Pale Blue Eye

Based on Louis Bayard’s novel of the same name, the whodunit follows young author Edgar Allen Poe (Harry Melling) who is helping a veteran detective (Christian Bale) solve a series of murders until everyone begins to suspect that he’s behind them in the first place.

Shutter Island

A US Marshal (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner (Mark Ruffalo) travel to an asylum on a remote island to investigate the disappearance of one of their patients but soon find themselves facing recurring migraines, an uncooperative staff and allegations of human experimentation.
