Films That Glorified Toxic Characters

Susanna from 7 Khoon Maaf (2011)

This dark comedy by Vishal Bhardwaj is an adaptation of the short story "Susanna's Seven Husbands" by Ruskin Bond. The film gives the audience a lot of amusement and entertainment out of the morbid setting of the film. It tells the disturbing story of a femme fatale who turns into a serial killer in the quest for love.

Maddy from Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001)

Despite achieving an iconic status with an entire generation of college goers, this film had very evidently problematic themes. Maddy’s character was portrayed as a rebel in college but was rather aggressive, disrespectful and manipulative.

Kundan from Raanjhanaa (2013)

Despite being a very rich film by Anand L. Rai, the story holds a very empathetic lens towards Kundan’s actions throughout. His obsessive and manic love for Zoya is the premise for a story that gets very dark because of Kundan’s entitled interference in Zoya’s life.

Ayan from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)

Directed by Karan Johar, this film is the story of unrequited love. Ayan’s character is very loveable in the film. Through the process of heartbreak and losing his best friend, he grows out of his comfort zone. However, at different points of the film, he keeps pushing the emotional responsibility of his feelings onto Alizeh.

Alisha from Gehraiyaan (2022)

Directed by Shakun Batra, this film tells the story of people that are still figuring themselves out. Alisha’s character in the film has a traumatic past attached to her. She seems very sorted at the face of it but her unhealed past manifests itself as a lot of complexity in her personality.

Rumi from Manmarziyaan (2018)

This film by Anurag Kashyap, while not categorised so, seems like a coming of age story of Rumi’s character. She represents a strong person, driven by her instincts and needs. The film was a refreshing and well told story of a character like her, but she also displayed a lot of selfish, impulsive and destructive tendencies that hurt her and the people around her.
