Robert Wise directed this Natalie Wood-Richard Beymer-starrer that was itself based on a musical that ported the romance of Romeo-Juliet to the streets of contemporary New York and interspersed the conflict with matters of growing teenagers and race.

Romanoff and Juliet (1961)

Based on a play by Peter Ustinov that was based on the Shakespearean play, the film was set in contemporary times and served as a romantic comedy against the backdrop of the Cold War.

Love is All There Is (1996)

Angelina Jolie and Nathaniel Marston starred in this tragicomedy about lovers from warring restaurant owning families in the Bronx.

Romeo + Juliet (1996)

Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the film starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Daines as young lovers from rival business families. Interestingly, despite the contemporary setting, the film used Shakespearean English.

Private Romeo (2011)

This film was based on an adaptation of the original play that set the love story inside the US Army, and turned it into a gay romance rather than the straight-laced one it normally was.

Gnomeo and Juliet (2011)

Kelly Ashbury's adaptation of the play took an animated form and moved the conflict from being one between humans to being one between gnomes instead.

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013)

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, this film, the one that introduced the pair of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, was set against the backdrop of warring families in contemporary Gujarat.
