The Decision

Romi (Preity Zinta) confronts Karan (Hrithik Roshan) about having given up on the one decision he made of his own free will and breaks up with him.

"Lakshya Ko Har Haal Mein Paana Hai!"

Chastened by his breakup, Karan returns to the Indian Military Academy, takes his punishment on the chin and throws himself into training wholeheartedly, determined to emerge as a worthy holder of a President's Commission.

"Woh Hai Mera Lakshya!"

As 3 Punjab regroup after substantial losses, Karan and Romi meet along the battered highway that overlooks the mountain the unit is to capture, and as they look at it from afar, he reminds her of the time she said he needed a 'Lakshya' in his life, and then says the mountain is his 'Lakshya'.

The Promise

Karan promises his Commanding Officer Colonel Sunil Damle (Amitabh Bachchan) that either the daredevil cliffclimbing mission will be a success, or he will not return alive.

The Call

The night before setting off on the do-or-die mission, a remorseful Karan calls his father (Boman Irani) to apologise for not having been a good enough son, only to be told that his father is immensely proud of having been proved wrong.

The Climb

A scene pulsated by ambient sound, spartan dialogue, and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's pulsating score forms the core of the assault team's daredevil climb of a mountain standing at over 5000 metres above sea level.

"They Have Done It"

As the sun breaks after the gunfight, a wounded Karan drags himself to the edge of the mountaintop to pitch the Tricolour atop it minutes before the unit's set deadline expires. As he fires a flare, Battalion Headquarters notes that their men have been successful.
