Lost in Translation (2003) by Sofia Coppola 

This romance comedy drama is about the unexpected relationship between a fading film star and a young college graduate. The two Americans meet at a restaurant in Tokyo and hit it off. The film explores the simultaneous feelings of disconnect and need for connection in one of the most atypical styles of narration till date.  

Little Women (2019) by Greta Gerwig 

Adapted from the book “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott, this film is a story of the four March sisters and their journey towards womanhood in the 1860s. The original story of the novel is classified as semi-autobiographical. In Greta’s rendition of the story, we follow the March sisters in a non-linear telling of finding themselves, finding love and finding purpose. 

Past Lives (2023) by Celine Song 

This directorial debut is a story about Nora and Hae Sung, childhood friends who are separated when Nora’s family shifts to Toronto. Based on the filmmaker’s own life, the story follows the journey Nora goes through before and upon reconnecting with Hae Sung. The film is a beautiful observation on human emotion and longing.  

Just Married (2007) by Meghna Gulzar 

This film explores the system of arranged marriages in India and the typically ensued hill station honeymoon. It tries to bring out the awkward newness of a relationship like this, it approaches the subject matter through the lens of humour and in an experimental style as well.

Fire (1996) by Deepa Mehta 

This is the first film of Deepa Mehta’s Elements Trilogy. It is loosely based on the short story, Lihaaf by Ismat Chughtai. The film is about two women finding space for themselves outside their respective marriages. Fire is one of the first films in India to explicitly explore a same-sex relationship. The film set off huge debates and dialogue of representation and freedom of speech in India.

Bangalore Days (2014) by Anjali Menon 

This is a coming of age story about three cousins from Kerala who move to Bangalore in their twenties. The cousins see each other through making the city their home and also support the changes in each other’s lives. It is a wholesome portrayal of family, friendship and growth.

Honeymoon Travels PVT. LTD. (2007) by Reema Kagti

Making her directorial debut, Reema Kagti’s film is about six couples on a group tour to Goa. This incredibly quirky and funny film follows the journey of these characters, revealing a lot about them as individuals and couples. The film advocates for love in all forms of expression and chooses its voice as an offbeat comedy drama.
