Trailer Talk: In Gold, Akshay Kumar Plays Hockey and Country loving ‘Crazy Bengali’

In Gold, Akshay Kumar plays a dhoti-clad Bengali coach who built the hockey team that won the first Olympic gold for an independent India, in 1948. Director Reema Kagti(Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, Talaash) has described the film as a fictional take on the events of 12 years of sporting history in that period.

There is a lot packed in in the 1-minute trailer – a teaser. It begins with a drunk Kumar being thrown out of of a smoky wrestling arena; "Im a crazy Bengali, who loves hockey, who loves his country," Kumar says in sightly Bengali accented English. This is the classic underdog sports story led by the coach; Kumar's character is a former hockey player. He has won medals for the British India but is yet to fulfil his dream of winning that gold medal for an independent India. We see glimpses of a Nazi Germany, men relaxing in the British era club.

Mouni Roy is cast opposite Kumar as his love interest in Gold. The film also features Amit Sadh and Vineet Kumar Singh. Produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, Gold releases on 15 August.
