The National Gallery of Modern Art Mumbai is currently hosting ‘Light Works’ – a retrospective of celebrated photographer Jeetendra Arya’s works, curated by Sabeena Gadihoke. The photo exhibition was inaugurated by Shabana Azmi on September 1 and will be on till October 8. The photographer didn’t merely chronicle famous people. His best photographs emerged from a creative culmination of technique and imagination. Light, shadow, gesture, pose, mood, angle and tone were used to create enduring portraits.

Arya published many photo features on artists, musicians and dancers in the Illustrated Weekly of India that was preferred by photographers because of its superior photogravure printing. In 1961, he joined the Times of India group of publications as a special photographer. His photographs of film stars appeared in various publications in India, including Screen, Filmfare, Madhuri, Dharmyug, Sarika, Gentleman and Debonair

Here's a glimpse into some of the fascinating moments captured by Arya through his career:

Actors Clark Gable and Ava Gardner on the sets of Mogambo in East Africa. The photo was later published in LIFE magazine in 1953

Actor Dev Anand with his son Suneil in Mumbai in the late 1950s

Actress Meena Kumari was photographed on the sets of Pakeezah (1972) which became the cover of Filmfare magazine in 1972
