Based on a serial killer who operated in Mumbai in the mid-1960s, Raman Raghav 2.0 is a neo noir psychological thriller that delves into the darker sides of the human psyche. The film states clearly that it is only inspired by the story of Raman Raghav, who had confessed to murdering 41 people. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the villainous killer Ramanna and Vicky Kaushal as the destructive cop Raghavan, the film explores the link between morality and violence through the killings, with the two men finding themselves to be opposite sides of the same coin.
Director Anurag Kashyap, told Film Companion in 2016 that this film was shot in a mere 21 days on a tight budget. “It brought me back from the dead after Bombay Velvet,” he added. Raman Raghav 2.0 premiered in the Directors' Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 with unanimous praise for the performances and the music composed by Ram Sampath.
Kashyap, who has said he was obsessed with the character for almost 20 years, co-wrote the film with Vasan Bala.
