Imtiaz Ali’s Highway released on this day, three years ago. The writer and filmmaker has, in the past, referred to the movie as his “dream” project, something he wrote in his early days of directing TV shows. “This story has been with me for 15 years, and I thought it would be my first film, but got made only now. I understand the story better now, so what I wanted it to say became very simple and I wanted the story to reflect that,” he said in one interview.
The film is told from the point of view of a young bride-to-be from a wealthy family named Veera (Alia Bhatt), who was kidnapped by a gang led by Mahabir (Randeep Hooda). As events unfold, Veera begins to undergo a transformation in captivity and ultimately, falls in love with her kidnapper, Mahabir.
Highway was heralded for its raw subject matter and stunning cinematography after its release. Bhatt and Hooda’s passionate performances were also applauded. The film won several awards including a Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critic’s Choice) and one for Best Story.
