Anu Malik may have won his National award in 2000 for Refugee, but his best work for director J P Dutta happened in their first film together, three years before that. Border focussed on the hardships faced by soldiers at war, and hence gave Malik and lyricist Javed Akhtar the opportunity to produce some soulful tracks that explored love and longing and loss, rather than just patriotic feelings.

Best Song of Border: Mere Dushman Mere Bhai had Hariharan deliver an award-winning performance, conveying the pain in Akhtar's lines to a tee, making it my favourite song from the album.
